#1. District 1, Le Thanh Ton Tantanmen Restaurant MISEN Review
Japanese-style tantanmen restaurant MISEN is located in an alley in Le Thanh Ton Japanese Town, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. This is a restaurant that makes authentic Japanese-style tantanmen with a different charm from mainland Chinese tantanmen. Even though it just opened, many Japanese and Chinese customers come here even on weekday evenings.
The entire two-story small building is used as a restaurant, and for a Chinese restaurant, it was very clean, perhaps because it was new. I visited alone on a Friday night for dinner and sat at a table in the corner of the first floor.
The price of beer was the same for Sapporo draft beer, Saigon Special, and Heineken, all at 50,000VND, so I ordered Sapporo draft beer. A staff made a big mistake of receiving Sapporo draft beer in an ice cup, but I drank it even though they said they would give me new one again.
For my first dish, I ordered Taiwan Ramen Normal. Unlike the oily and spicy broth of mainland China, which is seasoned with oil and spices, Japanese tantanmen broth is made by boiling bones and kelp, and then pouring in the oil from which chili peppers and garlic have been fried, so it tastes like oily and spicy ramen.
I ordered cilantro and a half-boiled eggs as toppings for my tantanmen. The eggs were cut in half and the cilantro was piled high on a small plate. I put all the toppings on top of the tantanmen.
The broth made from bones and kelp gave it a ramen-like feel, and the addition of spices such as chili oil, star anise, and Sichuan pepper gave it a spicy and oily taste, giving it a different appeal from ramen.
For the second dish, I ordered Sweet and Sour Fried Pork. Unlike the sweet and sour taste of Korean-style one, it was topped with a sour and salty soy sauce, which was better than I expected.
MISEN specializes in tantanmen, but it is also a Japanese-style Chinese restaurant that serves a variety of Chinese dishes, including sweet and sour pork, mapo tofu, and fried rice. The taste of the food is definitely different from other places, and I was very satisfied with the meal.
#2. Tantanmen Restaurant MISEN Menu
MISEN is an attractive tantanmen restaurant where you can taste authentic Japanese tantanmen at an affordable price. In addition to tantanmen, they also serve a variety of Chinese dishes such as stir-fried spinach, stir-fried morning glory, fried dumplings, mapo eggplant, mapo tofu, fried rice, and sweet and sour pork at reasonable prices. You have to scan the QR code on the table and order with your smartphone, but you can choose from several languages including Vietnamese, Japanese, English, and Korean, and all the menus have pictures, making it easy to order.
I visited for dinner alone on a Friday night and ordered as follows:
Taiwan Ramen Normal: 85,000VND
Boiled Flavored Eggs: 25,000VND
Cilantro Topping: 16,000VND
Sweet and Sour Fried Pork: 135,000VND
Sapporo Draft Beer: 50,000VND x 2 EA = 100,000VND
The total amount was 391,880VND including 8% general VAT and 10% alcohol VAT. MISEN is a tantanmen restaurant with a distinct character that sets it apart from other Japanese-style Chinese restaurants. The food was more appealing than I expected, and it was the first time in a long time that I had a satisfying meal at a Japanese-style Chinese restaurant.
