#1. District 1, Pink Church(Tan Dinh Church) Banh Xeo 46A Review
The famous banh xeo restaurant Banh Xeo 46A is located in an alley opposite the Pink Church(Tan Dinh Church) in District 1. This restaurant is popular with both foreigners and locals because can eat real banh xeo with good ingredients at a reasonable price. Compared to a few years ago, the number of foreign tourists visiting has increased significantly, and the service has gotten worse, so the Google rating has been lowered a lot, but it is still the number one banh xeo restaurant in Ho Chi Minh.
I visited with my family at 7pm on Sunday and, as expected, had to wait in line. There were a lot of people waiting in line, but there were a lot of tables and the turnover was good, so I waited about 20 minutes and got a seat. Time passed quickly as I watched the staff diligently making banh xeo using dozens of pans in the kitchen.
They do business by setting up tables in the alley next to the kitchen and in the interiors of two nearby buildings. It is a much larger restaurant than it looks. There are many foreign customers, but more than half of them are local Vietnamese, so I can tell that it is definitely a good restaurant.
After I sat down and ordered, they brought me an empty bowl and nuoc cham sauce. I poured an appropriate amount of nuoc cham sauce into my bowl and added some chopped chili peppers to make it spicier. Since there are a lot of foreign tourists, so the nuoc cham sauce isn't taste very strong, but can adjust the flavor by adding the nuoc mam sauce on the table.
They also serve a variety of vegetables, including lettuce, ssamchu, Thai basil, cilantro, and perilla leaves, which are used to wrap the banh xeo. I thought Korea was the only country that eats ssam wraps, but Vietnam also has a culture of wrapping something in vegetables.
Banh Xeo 46A sells a variety of drinks, including beer such as Saigon Special, 333, Tiger, Heineken, and Sapporo, as well as soft drinks, fruit juices, and iced tea. Perhaps because there are many foreign visitors, they also sell Zero Coke. I ordered Tra Da(Ice Tea), which is good for a light drink.
The first dish I ordered was Banh Xeo. It is a Vietnamese dish similar to a pancake, made by spreading a thin layer of yellow rice flour dough with curcuma longa, then filling it with pork, shrimp, and other ingredients and frying it.
I wrapped the banh xeo in lettuce and dipped it in nuoc cham sauce. The crispy texture, the taste of various ingredients, and the flavor added by the nuoc cham sauce were all very good. The lettuce and other vegetables balanced out the greasiness and stimulating taste, creating a good balance of flavors.
For our second dish, we ordered Banh Xeo Dac Biet(Special Banh Xeo). From the appearance of it, it didn't look much different from the regular banh xeo. It's a good size for two people to share.
I checked the ingredients inside and they added eggs and used fresher and larger shrimp than the regular banh xeo. They also added more pork so it couldn't help but be more delicious.
They added eggs and used better ingredients, but there was a big difference in taste and texture. It is only 50,000VND different from the regular banh xeo, so I definitely recommend ordering the special banh xeo.
#2. Banh Xeo 46A Menu
Banh Xeo 46A also sells food such as Cha Gio(Spring Rolls) and Goi Cuon(Fresh spring rolls) in addition to Banh Xeo. Although famous restaurant with a lot of tourists, the prices of food and drinks are reasonable. They sell a variety of drinks, including beer such as Saigon Special, 333, Tiger, Heineken, and Sapporo, as well as soft drinks, fruit juices, and iced tea.
I visited with my family on Sunday evening and ordered the following:
Banh Xeo Dac Biet: 180,000VND
Banh Xeo: 130,000VND
Tra Da(Iced Tea): 8,000VND x 3 EA = 24,000VND
Khan Lanh(Wet Wipe): 3,000VND x 3 EA = 9,000VND
I was able to have a satisfying meal with my family for a total of 323,000VND. Although the Google rating is below 4 because it is too crowded and unfriendly, but there are not many restaurants in Ho Chi Minh that serve better banh xeo. If you want to try real banh xeo, Banh Xeo 46A is definitely worth a visit.
