#1. District 1, Thai Van Lung Korean Restaurant BBQ Ong Map Review

Korean restaurant BBQ Ong Map operates about ten stores in District 1, 2, 4, and 7 in Ho Chi Minh City. This restaurant is popular not only with Koreans but also with young locals, as it offers a clean interior and offers a variety of grills such as pork belly, pork jowl, pork skin at a reasonable price.

Although it is not a high-priced BBQ restaurant, there is bound to be attractive to foreigners because it provides a service where the staff grills the meat themselves. On a Saturday evening, my friend and I visited the Thai Van Lung branch in District 1, which is located in the Japanese town, to have a meal and drink, and there were more Korean customers than other branches.

The side dishes include kimchi, stir-fried fish cake, pickled radish, pickled perilla leaves, green onion salad, salad, and ssam. Compared to other BBQ restaurants, it may look a little shabby, but it goes well with meat, and you can keep getting refills if you need more, so I think this is not bad.

First, I ordered two servings of pork belly and one serving of frozen pork belly. One serving(180g) of pork belly consists of two thick pieces of pork belly, and one serving(180g) of frozen pork belly consists of 10 pieces or more thin slices of pork belly.

The staff carefully grilled each piece of meat and cut it into bite-sized pieces, so I was able to comfortably chat with my friend while eating. The quality of the meat wasn't great, but it was okay for the price.

In fact, frozen pork belly cannot compete with fresh pork belly in terms of texture or taste, but if you slice very thinly quick-frozen pork belly and grill it until crispy on both sides, it has a slightly rough but crispy texture and a savory flavor, which is quite attractive.

The pork belly was attractive because of skin and thick layer of fat, juicy as well as its chewy and soft texture. It was more delicious to dip the pork belly in a savory and salty sesame oil with salt than in ssamjang.

I ordered kimchi stew because I was bored of just eating meat. It was a large earthen pot filled with sour kimchi, pork, tofu, onions, green onions, and chili peppers, and it was generous, but the taste was just okay. The sourness of the kimchi and the spiciness of the chili peppers were good, but the dry texture of the pork was a bit disappointing.

I ordered one serving of frozen pork belly and one serving of pork skin(150g). The pork skin is a very popular menu item, so much so that some people visit BBQ Ong Map just for it.

The pork skin is pressed down with a pressing plate and grilled until crispy on both sides, creating a chewy texture that sticks to the tongue and a rich flavor that is quite attractive. You can enjoy pork skin even more deliciously by dipping it in soybean powder and vinegared red pepper paste.
