#1. District 1, Le Thanh Ton Japanese Restaurant Kuon Quon Review
Japanese restaurant Kuon Quon is located in the Le Thanh Ton Japanese Town in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. There are several Japanese restaurants that serve tendon(tempura rice bowls), but Kuon Quon is the only restaurant in Ho Chi Minh that specializes in tempura rice bowls. It is a charming restaurant where you can taste the highest quality tendon in Ho Chi Minh at a reasonable price.
I visited alone for dinner on Thursday evening. It moved to a different building nearby earlier this year, and it is still a fairly small restaurant. The owner of this place also runs the ramen restaurant CHOI OI NOODLE right next building, so it is able to order from CHOI OI NOODLE’s menu as well.
There is a kitchen on the first floor, and there are a few tables for eating in the hall on the second floor. As soon as I sat down, they quickly served me iced tea and a wet wipe. Before they moved, used to serve a wider variety of menus, but now they have greatly reduced their menus, and only sell tendon sets and soba sets, as well as the menu of the ramen shop CHOI OI NOODLE.
Since I visited a tendon restaurant, I ordered their signature menu item, Tendon(Tempura Rice Bowl). The tendon set was generously comprised of tendon, miso soup, salad, pickled cucumber, half-boiled egg, and stir-fried anchovies.
It was plentiful, with variety of tempura(shrimp head, shrimp, eggplant, shiitake mushroom, zucchini, lotus root, chicken breast, and seaweed) piled on top of rice. I was able to enjoy it more deliciously by sprinkling some of the sweet and salty tempura sauce(tentsuyu) to my liking.
I had originally planned to drink Sapporo draft beer, but on that day, they ran out of draft beer, so I ordered a Black Nikka Highball. It was a highball made with Black Nikka whiskey, which is famous for its good cost-effectiveness compared to Kakubin, and I liked that it was filled to the brim in a large glass.
There were a lot of tempura piled on top of the rice, making it difficult to eat, so I put them on the lid. The fresh ingredients were coated with a thin batter that was crispy and soft, and it was very nice.
Pour half-boiled egg and tempura sauce on rice and eat it with tempura, and the rich taste of egg, sweet and salty sauce, and oily tempura taste come together to create a fantastic harmony. There is no Japanese restaurant that serves tendon better than Kuon Quon in Ho Chi Minh.
Kuon Quon has two signature menus Tendon set and Soba set. But soba here varies greatly in taste from day to day, so I highly recommend ordering tendon. Anyway, the taste of tendon is the best in Ho Chi Minh, so you will never regret ordering it.
#2. Japanese Restaurant Kuon Quon Menu
Kuon Quon's signature menu items are tendon sets and soba sets, and they also sell tempura and soba as individual items. They also run a ramen restaurant called CHOI OI NOODLE right next door, so you can order from CHOI OI NOODLE's menu as well. The prices are reasonable for a Japanese restaurant in Le Thanh Ton, and they do not charge VAT separately, making it a very attractive restaurant.
I visited alone on Thursday evening and ordered and ate as follows:
Tendon(Tempura Rice Bowl): 210,000VND
Black Nikka Highball: 90,000VND
I was able to enjoy a proper tendon at a reasonable price of 300,000VND. Kuon Quon is the only tendon specialty restaurant in Ho Chi Minh. The tendon here is generous and the quality of the tempura is excellent, so I am always very satisfied every time I visit. However, the taste of the soba has been controversial for a long time and has not improved until now, which is a bit disappointing.
