#1. District 1, Thai Van Lung Japanese Restaurant SUIZAN Review
Japanese restaurant SUIZAN is located in the basement of the Japanese hotel AZUMAYA on Thai Van Lung Street in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. This restaurant serves delicious tonkatsu, tendon, udon, and soba. It is popular not only with Japanese people living in Ho Chi Minh but also with other foreigners because it offers a reasonable price, generous portions, and the taste of Japan.
The restaurant is old, as it has been in business on Thai Van Lung Street for quite some time, but it is not dirty and has the unique feel of an old Japanese restaurant. I visited for a meal on a Saturday evening and sat at the bar table near the entrance.
SUIZAN's alcohol prices are considerably cheaper than other Japanese restaurants in the area, with a highball costing 60,000VND and a Sapporo draft beer costing 40,000VND. I started my meal that day with a highball.
When I ordered the tonkatsu set for my meal, they brought out a sesame grinder mortar and tonkatsu sauce first. After grinding the sesame seeds, I just had to pour an appropriate amount of sauce into the mortar. Since ground the sesame seeds right there, the sweet sauce was added a strong nutty aroma and flavor.
For dinner that day, I ordered the Pork Loin & Fillet Tonkatsu Set. The set consists of pork loin tonkatsu, pork fillet tonkatsu, salad, kimchi, katsuobushi tofu, rice, and miso soup.
The portion is quite generous with one pork loin tonkatsu and two pork fillet tonkatsu. The kimchi included in the set was not sweet Japanese style kimchi, but real kimchi with a proper sour and spicy flavor, so it was very delicious.
The pork loin tonkatsu had a moderately chewy texture and a rich flavor mixed with fat. The crispy batter adhered well to the meat, making it visually complete.
Pork fillet tonkatsu uses tender cuts with little fat, so normally can enjoy a softer texture than loin tonkatsu. However, SUIZAN's fillet was cut in the direction of the grain, so it felt chewy rather than soft.
When eating tonkatsu, I couldn't help but order a Sapporo draft beer that costs only 40,000VND. The combination of cold draft beer and tonkatsu was, as expected, very good.
Japanese restaurant SUIZAN sells tonkatsu of a quality and quantity that is in no way inferior to FUJIRO. In addition to tonkatsu, they also make really good tendon, udon, and soba, so if you want to try a variety of Japanese food, I recommend visiting SUIZAN.
#2. Japanese Restaurant SUIZAN Menu
Japanese restaurant SUIZAN is a restaurant specializing in tonkatsu, tendon, udon, and soba. It is a restaurant that is especially popular with Japanese people because of its reasonable price and excellent taste. Since the price of alcohol is considerably cheaper than other Japanese restaurants in the area, it is also a good place to visit for a drink. The set menu is also good, and it is very attractive because you can experience the same taste as you did in Japan.
I visited for a meal alone on a Saturday evening and ordered as follows:
Pork Loin & Fillet Tonkatsu Set: 204,000VND
Highball: 61,111VND
Sapporo Draft Beer: 40,741VND
Including 8% VAT, it came to a fairly cheep price of 330,320VND. SUIZAN is a Japanese restaurant specializing in tonkatsu, tendon, udon, and soba that will leave you very satisfied every time you visit. It is an attractive restaurant where you can enjoy Japanese food and alcohol to your heart's content at a reasonable price. I recommend visiting if you are craving tonkatsu and tendon.
