#1. District 3, Rice Noodles Pho Hoa Pasteur Review
Pho Hoa Pasteur is always considered one of the top 3 pho(Rice Noodles) restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City, is located on Pasteur Street in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City. This is a real pho restaurant that was selected and certified by the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2023. The prices are a little higher than other pho restaurants, but it is a place where you can taste food of higher quality.
I visited to have a meal alone around 8pm on a Thursday evening, and even though it was raining heavily, there were hardly any empty seats. Half of the customers were local Vietnamese and the other half were foreigners, and we could see that this restaurant was recognized as a good restaurant by both locals and foreigners.
One drawback of Pho Hoa Pasteur is that there are always various spices, limes, and pepper slices on the table. I'm sure there were items mixed in that other customers had picked up with their hands, but since other local restaurants are in a similar situation, it's hard to say it's a big drawback.
In addition to the spices, there is a plate of Quay on the table. It is cheap at 7,000VND per piece, so it is not bad to eat casually with rice noodles. This is rice dough fried in oil and dipped in hot rice noodle soup. But It wasn't my taste.
While waiting for my order of rice noodles, I ordered a Banh Pateso(Meat Pie). I was surprised to see three pies on my plate, so I asked the staff and they told me that I could eat as much as I wanted and pay. Don't be surprised if you order one and receive multiple.
The layers of soft yet crispy pastry are filled with salty meatballs and are quite delicious. At Pho Hoa Pasteur, it takes a while for the rice noodles to come out, but Banh Pateso(Meat Pie) and Banh Bao(Meat Dumpling) are served right away, so it's great to order as a snack while waiting for the rice noodles.
For my drink, I ordered Nuoc Mia(Sugar Cane Juice). It's nothing special, just regular sugar cane juice sold at other local restaurants, and it's attractive because it's very cheap at 8,000VND.
The Pho Dac Biet(Large) I ordered came with a plate of boiled bean sprouts. The special rice noodles(Pho Dac Biet) are hearty rice noodles with various ingredients such as brisket, skirt meat, flank, meatballs, and omasum. If there are not ingredients you particularly dislike, I recommend ordering this.
You can add various spices, bean sprouts, lime, red pepper slices, hoisin sauce, chili sauce, etc. to suit your taste. Because the pepper slices are quite spicy, do not touch them with your hands, and Just let the spiciness soak into the soup and discard.
Pho Hoa Pasteur's rice noodles are Hanoi-style, with a rich meat broth with little sweetness and plenty of onions and chives, making it similar to light rib soup with a meaty and umami flavor. In addition, various parts of the beef, such as brisket, skirt meat, and flank, are added in abundance, adding a variety of textures and flavors, giving immense satisfaction. It’s not one of the top three pho restaurants in Ho Chi Minh for nothing.
#2. Rice Noodles Pho Hoa Pasteur Menu
Pho Hoa Pasteur serves rice noodles with various parts of beef and chicken rice noodles as its main menu, and serves fresh spring rolls, meat pies, quay, and meat dumplings as sides. Compared to other local restaurants, the food menu prices are a little higher, but the portions are plentiful and the taste is good. It was even selected as a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2023, so the prices are reasonable, or rather, it feels a little cheap.
I visited for a solo meal on a Thursday evening and ordered the following.
Pho Dac Biet(Large): 105,000VND
Nuoc Mia(Sugar Cane Juice): 8,000VND
Banh Pateso(Meat Pie): 28,000VND
Wet Tissue: 2,000VND
I was able to taste authentic, delicious Hanoi-style rice noodles for a reasonable price of 143,000VND. The price is a little higher than other pho restaurants, but considering the overall quality, including the quantity and taste of the pho, I think it is a very reasonable price. Pho Hoa Pasteur is definitely one of the top three pho restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City, and I highly recommend visiting if you want to taste authentic pho in Ho Chi Minh City.
