District 2, An Phu Korean Chinese Restaurant BAO BOI Review(2024.08)

#1. District 2, An Phu Korean Chinese Restaurant BAO BOI Review

Korean Chinese restaurant BAO BOI recently opened its first store in Vietnam on Song Hanh Street, An Phu, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City. It is a large franchise that operates about 200 stores in Korea alone after opening its first store in Hawolgok-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul in 2013.

BAO BOI is a restaurant that is popular not only with young Koreans in their 10s to 30s, but also with Vietnamese locals, as it has a clean and modern interior that gives you the feel of a neat casual dining, unlike the dirty and old feeling that comes to mind when you think of a Chinese restaurant.

I visited alone on a Wednesday evening and sat down at a table in the corner. As expected from a Korean Chinese restaurant, vinegar, soy sauce, and red pepper powder are placed on the table and side dishes include cabbage kimchi, pickled radish, onion, and black bean paste are served.

Since I was at a Chinese restaurant, I ordered a bottle of Tsingtao beer. It is a golden lager with a slightly bitter taste and a nutty, refreshing sensation that goes well with oily Chinese dishes.

For my first dish, I ordered Bobea Gan Jjajang. Many Google reviews recommended that it was so delicious, so I ordered it, but it wasn't the original Gan Jjajang, but it was made with onions added to the pre-made jjajang(black bean paste) sauce and stir-fried again.

Still, the egg fried was on top, and the sweet and salty taste along with the smoky flavor was quite delicious. This type of Gan Jjajang is quite attractive as it has a little more moisture than the original Jjajang and has a taste somewhere between that of Gan Jjajang and regular Jjajang.

For my second dish, I ordered Bobae Jjamppong(S). When I go to a Korean Chinese restaurant, I want to eat both Jjajangmyeon and Jjamppong, and I really liked that they were selling small sizes of Jjamppong. The portion was half the size of regular jjamppong and contained a generous amount of pork, squid, onions, chives, and wood ear mushrooms.

The thick and spicy soup based on pork broth with a smoky flavor is just like the jjamppong I ate in Korea. It was moderately spicy and delicious with the texture and sweetness of the chives and onions.

As my third and final dish, I ordered Sweet and Sour Pork(S). As a small menu item, there were 8 pieces of deep fried pork and it was a good amount to eat casually with the main dish. The thick batter was soft and fluffy rather than crispy, and it was delicious when dipped in a sweet and sour sauce with a citron scent.

BAO BOI is cheaper than other Korean Chinese restaurants in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, and the food tastes above basic. The portions are generous and the interior is hip, so it is a restaurant that attract customers ranging from Koreans to Vietnamese locals.

#2. Korean Chinese Restaurant BAO BOI Menu

BAO BOI has most of the menu items that a Korean Chinese restaurant should have. Compare with other Korean Chinese restaurants in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, the prices are generally lower. You can upgrade size of your meal by adding 30,000VND, and there is a small menu for customers dining alone, so it is good to visit alone.

I visited alone for dinner on a Wednesday evening and ordered the following.

  1. Bobea Gan Jjajang: 139,000VND

  2. Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup(S): 99,000VND

  3. Sweet and Sour Pork(S): 109,000VND

  4. Tsingtao Beer: 99,000VND

For a total of 446,000VND, I was able to fill my stomach and enjoy a variety of Korean-style Chinese dishes. BAO BOI is an attractive place where you can taste dishes more than the basic in generous portions at a reasonable price. It is a popular restaurant not only among Koreans but also among young Vietnamese with a neat interior that is not typical of a Chinese restaurant.
