#1. District 2, Thao Dien Rice Noodles Restaurant PHO SOL Review
PHO SOL, a rice noodles restaurant, operates stores in Districts 1, 2, 4, and 7 of Ho Chi Minh City. The prices are quite high for a local restaurant, but you can taste high quality Hanoi-style pho and side dishes in a neat restaurant, so it is definitely worth a visit if you live nearby.
On that day, I visited the store located in Thao Dien, District 2. There are tables for eating outdoors and indoors, but it is better to eat indoors with the air conditioner rather than sweating profusely while eating hot rice noodles outside in the hot weather.
I ordered Nuoc Sau(Plum Tea) as a drink. It tastes almost the same as you know, but is sweeter. Still, it is easy to drink due to the unique plum scent and sweet and sour taste.
For my first dish, I ordered Pho Cuon Ha Noi(Fresh Spring Rolls). Pho Cuon is a Hanoi-style fresh spring roll made by beef stir-fried with pepper, soy sauce, salt, garlic, and onion and rolled in rice dough.
The inside of the rice dough is filled with lettuce and stir-fried beef, giving it a similar feel to wrapping lettuce with bulgogi and rice. It is quite delicious when dipped in the nuoc mam sauce that comes with it.
For my second dish, I ordered Pho Tho Da Gu Bo(Stone Pot Brisket Rice Noodle). It came with a stone pot filled with rich broth made from brisket, flank, and oxtail, and a plate topped with raw sliced chuck creast, meatballs, rice noodles, and herbs.
On a square plate, there are three pieces of raw sliced chuck creast, two meatballs, rice noodles, Thai basil, culantro, chives, and onions. The order doesn't really matter, just add them all into the hot soup in the stone pot at once. The staff told me that I could eat raw brisket after 1 minute and meatballs after about 5 minutes.
Unlike rice noodles from the southern region, it is less sweet and sour and has a stronger salty taste and the deep flavor of the beef broth. It is a taste that will not be widely divided between likes and dislikes. You can take the taste to the next level by adding chili sauce, lime juice, and pickled garlic to add spiciness and sourness.
PHO SOL, a pho restaurant, is a bit pricey for a local restaurant, but it is well worth a visit if you live nearby as you can taste high quality authentic Hanoi-style pho in neat restaurant.
#2. Rice Noodles Restaurant PHO SOL Menu
PHO SOL sells a variety of pho(rice noodles), side dishes, and desserts such as ice cream, coffee, and yogurt. Just like at Japanese ramen restaurants, it also possible choose your rice noodles and then add a variety of toppings of your choice such as sliced chuck creast, flank, brisket, tongue, short rib, bone marrow.
I visited alone for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon and ordered the following.
Pho Tho Da Gu Bo(Stone Pot Brisket Rice Noodle): 179,000VND
Pho Cuon Ha Noi(Fresh Spring Rolls): 89,000VND
Nuoc Sau(Plum Tea): 39,000VND
I was able to eat my fill for a total of 309,000VND. It's not bad to eat cheap local street food while squatting on a dirty street without air conditioning, but when friends or family visit Ho Chi Minh City, it's an attractive restaurant because you can comfortably eat high quality authentic Hanoi pho, even if the price is a little higher than other local restaurants.
